Why the state line matters
Three states,
three sets
of rules
Most haulers around here quote every job the same way regardless of which side of a line it is on. That does not work, because the disposal systems are genuinely different and they are the largest single input into your price.
Maryland. Cecil County runs its own Central Landfill at 758 East Old Philadelphia Road in Elkton, open Monday through Saturday, 7:30am to 3:30pm. The county’s two transfer stations — Woodlawn in Colora and Stemmer’s Run in Earleville — only take bagged household trash and recyclables, so every cleanout load in the county goes to Elkton regardless of which end of it the job was on. Harford County waste goes instead to the Harford Waste Disposal Center on Scarboro Road in Street. And Cecil County facilities will not accept waste generated outside the county, so a hauler working a Delaware job cannot simply bring it back to Elkton.
Delaware. Everything runs through the Delaware Solid Waste Authority. Most northern New Castle County material goes to Cherry Island Landfill on East 12th Street in Wilmington; south of the canal, the Pine Tree Corner Transfer Station in Townsend is the closer gate.
Pennsylvania. Southern Chester County and lower Lancaster County debris goes north to the Lanchester Landfill in Narvon, run by the Chester County Solid Waste Authority. It is the longest disposal run in our whole service area, and it is the honest reason a Pennsylvania quote reads differently than a Cecil County one.
We are set up for all three. That is not a boast — it is the reason we can quote a Newark, Delaware job without either turning it down or quietly padding it to cover a detour.
