gets priced
Appliances are priced per unit rather than by volume, and refrigerant-bearing units cost more than the rest. That is not a markup — refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, and dehumidifiers all have to have their refrigerant recovered by a certified technician before the shell can legally be scrapped, and that step costs money.

Why fridges
cost more
Every sealed refrigeration unit — refrigerator, freezer, window air conditioner, dehumidifier — contains refrigerant that has to be recovered by a certified technician before the metal can be scrapped. Federal rule, enforced at the state level, and no scrap yard or landfill in Maryland, Delaware, or Pennsylvania will take a unit that has not been through it.
So when a hauler quotes a refrigerator at the same rate as a washing machine, one of two things is happening: either they are absorbing the cost, or the unit is not being handled properly. We would rather show you the line item and explain it.
The upside is that appliances are mostly steel. Once the refrigerant is out, the shell goes to a recycler rather than onto the landfill scale, and that keeps the price lower than the weight would suggest.

Do you disconnect the appliance?
We will unhook a standard plug-in unit and a washer’s hoses. We do not cut or cap gas lines, and we do not do electrical work on a hardwired unit — that needs a licensed plumber or electrician, and it needs to be done before we get there.
Why does a refrigerator cost more than a washer?
Certified refrigerant recovery. It is a required step before the unit can be scrapped and it is a real cost. Anyone quoting a fridge at washer prices is either eating it or skipping it.
Will you take a working appliance?
Yes, and if it genuinely works we will try to route it to a donation center rather than a scrap yard. Tell us it works — otherwise we assume it does not.
Can you take just one appliance?
In our closer towns, yes. Farther out, a single-unit pickup often is not worth a truck roll for either of us and we will say so rather than quote you a price that makes it worth it for us and not for you.
